If you wander down Bao’an Road in Tainan, you might catch it before you see it — that unmistakable, head-turning aroma of curry drifting out from under a humble street awning. Follow your nose and you’ll find “A-Juan Curry Rice,” a no-frills local legend that’s been filling bellies and anchoring memories for decades.
Forget the fiery spices of South Asia — Taiwanese curry is a different creature entirely. Here, the sauce is golden and silky, clinging luxuriously to each grain of rice. The first spoonful is all about comfort: a gentle pepper warmth, the natural sweetness of slow-cooked onions, and the earthy perfume of potatoes and carrots simmered until they practically melt. The pork comes in generous chunks, tender enough to fall apart with a nudge of your spoon, soaking up the rich, velvety sauce.
While the curry rice is the headliner, the side dishes are worth lingering over. The shiitake mushroom soup is pure simplicity: thick-cut mushrooms, meaty in texture, bobbing in a clear, sweet broth that tastes like a quiet countryside morning. Then there’s the “dry” pig’s blood rice cake — firm yet springy, with a sticky rice chew that’s lifted by a drizzle of savory-sweet sauce and a punch of fresh ginger.
You’ll eat under the shade of the sidewalk, with the clatter of metal spoons and the hum of street chatter around you. Regulars swear by this place — some have been coming since their school days, now bringing their own children to sit at the same tables. And because this is a traditional old shop, there’s one more thing to remember: cash only. No cards, no mobile payments — just a few bills in your pocket and an appetite ready for something timeless.
In Tainan, where food is woven into the rhythm of everyday life, A-Juan’s silky, fragrant curry isn’t just a meal. It’s a postcard in edible form — a taste of the city’s warmth, served one golden spoonful at a time.
