Tucked away in Lane 746 of Gongyuan Road in Tainan’s North District lies a temple that’s quietly become a pilgrimage site—not just for the devout, but for students seeking a heavenly edge during exam season.
Ciyun Temple (慈雲寺) traces its roots back to the pre-1945 village of Machaliao. What began as a private household shrine maintained by local resident Su Qi eventually became a public place of worship. The temple was officially established in 1964 and built facing south, purposefully aligned to look toward Chaofeng Temple in the distant Dagang Mountain—a symbolic gesture of honoring its origins.
But what truly sets Ciyun Temple apart isn’t just its architectural grace or blend of Taoist and Buddhist elements—it’s the presence of Wenshu Pusa, the Buddhist Bodhisattva of Wisdom. While most Taoist students turn to Wenchang Dijun for help with exams, those who visit Ciyun Temple seek the clarity and intellect embodied by Wenshu. So popular is this practice that even principals from nearby schools like Yanping Junior High lead students in group prayers here before big tests.
At the heart of this academic devotion stands a rather unique relic: the Tongtian Zhihui Bi, or “Heaven-reaching Wisdom Brush.” Towering over two meters tall—larger than most people—this symbolic brush looks like a supersized calligraphy pen aimed straight at the sky. Think of it as the scholarly version of Excalibur. Adorned with sparkling crystal details by the temple chairman’s daughter, the shimmering brush tip is said to “light up” one’s mind.
The ritual? After praying to Wenshu, visitors walk clockwise around the brush and gently touch it. Locals believe this act boosts mental clarity and test-day luck. It's not unusual to find the altar decked with examination permits and wish cards during the testing season.
For those wanting to take a piece of this spiritual energy home, the temple also offers mini versions of the brush—blessed, of course. Many bring theirs back to the temple on April 4, Wenshu’s birthday, to have them recharged with divine light.
Though small and understated, Ciyun Temple is a meaningful detour for curious travelers, culture buffs, and anyone who believes that a little extra wisdom from the universe never hurts. After all, who wouldn’t want a cosmic nudge toward success?
